African Botanicals

This small mural is located on a residential street next to a public footpath and local park. Before commissioning this mural, the owners of the property had painted signs onto their public-facing garage door in support of the Black Lives Matter movement during the May - June protests in 2020.

Later that summer, the property owners contacted me because although they did not want to erase the messages they did want to find a longer-term creative solution to honouring the protests beautifully and permanently. My brief was to create a design that spoke to the of valuing Black lives and of African heritage. The resulting mural is a lush celebration of plants interwoven with patterns from across the continent. Some patterns form a backdrop to the plants, others adorn and add texture to the foliage.
