Drawing Zine & Mural

Zine cover drawing by Adele | 2021

During COP26, I was commissioned by the St Pancras and Somers Town Living Centre to paint two murals inside their building. The designs came from drawings by local residents who had taken part in my Wild drawing Through Lockdown workshops, which ran over six weeks during the Spring 2021 lockdown.

“It is amazing to see our own work on a public wall. Thank you for boosting people’s confidence.”

Lockdown drawing workshops

Our lives are made from the things we pay attention to. Slowing down and observing - these are radical things to do in our accelerated age.
— Lucy Jones, Losing Eden

Inspired by the humble house plant, the workshop programme involved experimental and mindful drawing activities held online at a time when access to green space was severely restricted.

Each week we met to draw our plants and chat about the wider theme of nature connectedness. The exercises were designed to introduce new ways of looking at the everyday and opportunities to experiment with mark-making, materials and, when lockdown lifted, experience drawing outside in the local Story Garden.

At the end, participants shared their favourite drawings to create a ‘Wild Drawing Through Lockdown’ zine (below), with the intention of sharing their insights and inspiring others to play with drawing without inhibition or expectation, but simply for the joy of it and and the positive impact it has on ones wellbeing.

Scroll through the images to read participants reflections on wild drawing and please get in contact if you would like a PDF version of the zine. This project was supported by the Living Centre and Global Generation.
